Cersaie 2010: Conferences and Seminars Urban spaces and migration

The increasingly rapid pace of globalisation and migratory flows of contemporary society has lent new meaning to urban city spaces. The city has acquired a central role in the configuration of multicultural society. Designing today’s cities means above all taking account of the unstable and fluid variations in cultural forms in order to create an urban space suitable both for the deployment of new forms of diversity and for a hybridisation that transforms it constantly, at the boundary between conflict management and consensus building.

Biographical notes Claudio Baraldi teaches Social systems and communication cultures and Sociology of intercultural conflicts at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he is currently Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. He works on intercultural communication, dialogue and interlinguistic and intercultural mediation.

Biographical notes Michael Keith teaches sociology and is the Director of COMPAS (Centre of Migration, Policy and Society). His research interests focus on the interface between culture, urbanism and migration, with particular reference to immigration and integration policies in the United Kingdom and in China.

Biographical notes Vittorio Iervese teaches Sociology of cultural processes and Theory and methods of cultural promotion at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. His areas of research include cultural planning in contexts of migration and international cooperation.
