Cersaie 2026: Conferences and Seminars
Creative Matter: Culture and Experimentation in Contemporary Ceramics

THU 24 September - 4.30 p.m.
Services Centre - "The Square"

Event organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Chapter of the Association for Industrial Design (ADI)

This talk draws parallels between two contrasting contemporary design experiences: the Dutch studio IOUS in Rotterdam and the Italian Zanellato/Bortotto studio in Treviso. These two studios have different approaches, cultural contexts and design trajectories, but they both use ceramics as a basis for research and experimentation.

The discussion focuses not only on the material itself, but also on how design can interpret and transform it. Culture, territory, technology, production processes and generational sensibilities are key lenses through which to observe the evolution of contemporary ceramics and its relationship with design.

The comparison between the Netherlands and Italy also enables us to draw parallels between two distinct design cultures. On the one hand, there is a context that is strongly oriented towards experimentation, the hybridisation of design languages, and the exploration of new processes. On the other hand, there is a tradition that is deeply rooted in the material, craftsmanship, and the production system.
‘Creative Matter’ explores the space that emerges from the intersection of these two approaches, moving beyond contrasts and stereotypes to examine the future possibilities of ceramic design.

In an illustrated presentation, IOUS and Zanellato/Bortotto will discuss the projects, processes and influences that characterise their working methods. This will be followed by a discussion with Veronica Rodenigo from Il Giornale dell’Architettura, who will explore the themes and issues raised in the two talks, highlighting similarities, differences and potential points of contact.
