Issues relating to the safety of the envelope in architectural, functional and static restoration of buildings

Biographical notes
Degree in Industrial Chemistry from University of Bologna. Coordinator of Advanced Technical Ceramics Section of Centro Ceramico Bologna, Centre of Research and Experimentation for the Ceramic Industry – Laboratory of Emilia-Romagna Region High Technology Network – and director of the Centro Ceramico thermal analysis laboratory. He works on national and international research projects with specific scientific management roles. He carries out scientific and research activities in the following fields: preparation of colloidal suspensions of ceramic powders, technologies for forming advanced ceramic materials (slip casting, pressure slip casting and injection moulding), functionalisation of ceramic surfaces. He has written more than 70 scientific and general ublications on the above themes invarious Italian and foreign trade magazines, monographs and books.

The role of ceramic tiles in building restoration: needs and innovative proposals of designers and producers

Biographical notes
Engineer, senior researcher at  ICIE, Institute for applied research and technology transfer. Since 1991 she has participated in the creation, design and management of complex projects., in collaboration with research institutions and companies operating in the construction industry.
On behalf of the European Commission has carried out studies on the diffusion of innovative energy technologies.
As the head of the national lines of research has followed the development and application of experimental building technologies and innovative plant designed to ensure comfort and well-being in confined spaces and sustainable energy in buildings.
She is responsible since 2006, within the ambit of two Laboratories of the High Technology Network of the Region of Emilia Romagna, Larco Icos and Lisea, for research lines that develop studies on new buildings envelope components and technologies, on new plants technologies and on integration of buildings envelope and equipments for the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings.
She is currently responsible for coordinating and managing the program BIPV- Building Integrated Photovolaics, industrial research program co-financed by Italian Ministry of Economic Development.

Biographical notes
Antonello Stella was born in Legnano (MI) in 1961. He graduates from University of Rome “La Sapienza”, School of Architecture, where he accomplishes his Architectural Design PHd and Improvement Course in Architecture Theory. In 1998 he becomes Teaching Fellow at University of Ferrara, School of Architecture. In 2002 he is named substitute professor in the Interior Design Studio at University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Valle Giulia School of Interior Design
In 1991 he is among the founders of n!studio, in 2002 he is partner of  ferrini::stella:;n!studio associated architects. Projects have been published inside the most relevant architectural magazines, among which Casabella (Archaeological Museum in Pitigliano, 1998) Domus, Architecture Cree (River Museum in Nazzano 2002) Detail , Architectural Review (Laboratory-Storage for Archaeological finds at the  Villa dei Quintili – Rome 2007) AD, (Archaeological Museum in San Vincenzo al Volturno 2007); They have been presented to numerous International Architecture Exhibitions (Venice Biennale 1996, 2000; Milan Triennale 1997, 2003) and have received several awards and recognitions (Inarch Award Lazio 2000 and 2001, Special Price at Medaglia D’Oro for Italian Architecture 2003-2005).
He took part to many conferences both in Italian and Foreign Istitutes ((Ecole Polytecnique in Losanna, Cornell University in Rome,  Ascoli, Pescara, Rome and Venice School of Architecture).

Biographical notes
Marcello Balzani was born in Forlì, Italy on 5 August 1962. He is associate professor at the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and has also taught at the universities of Florence and Ferrara.  As Director of the DIAPReM (Development of Integrated Automatic Procedures for Restoration of Monuments) centre of the University of Ferrara, he is responsible for dozens of national and international research projects in various archaeological areas (Pompei, Benevento and Rome) and monumental contexts (in Italy: Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Michelangelo in Florence, Leon Battista Alberti in Mantova, Ferrara, Florence and Rimini; internationally: in the fortified citadel of Gozo in Malta, in Mexico City, Cairo and Salvador de Bahia), as well as in smaller Italian towns throughout the country. Since his appointment as director, he has overseen agreements with research centres, ministries, archaeological heritage offices and study centres, and has led DIAPReM to undertake scientific and industrial partnerships and training agreements in Italy and abroad. Since June 2008 he has held the position of Vice Director of the Architecture Department of the University of Ferrara. In March 2010 he was appointed Scientific Director of the TekneHub Laboratory of the University of Ferrara Technopole, part of the Regione Emilia-Romagna High-Technology Network Construction Platform, and in October Scientific Director of the Constructions Platform. He is a member of the Italian Design Union, the National Urban Planning Institute  and the Focus Area Cultural Heritage, Horizontal Issue “Archaeology”, of the European Construction Technology Platform. He has been a jury member and jury chairman for national and international architecture competitions and awards, including the “Innovazione e Qualità Urbana” award, the “International Prize for Sustainable Architecture”, and the “International Domus Restoration and Preservation Prize”, which he helped found and support. He is associated with the “Architettura>Energia” Centre of the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and is scientific director of WebgisLab of the Consorzio Ferrara Ricerche. He is editor of the architecture magazines Paesaggio Urbano and Architetti, idee cultura e progetto.
